The Standards of Practice for registrants of the College assists opticians to provide competent and ethical care by setting the requirements for practice. There is an expectation that anyone using the protected title "optician" has the training, competency, and professional conduct consistent with the standards of practice agreed upon by the profession. The Standards of Practice provides healthcare consumers with a clear understanding of the quality of care they should receive from a Licensed Optician.

The new Standards of Practice includes guidelines that represent the College’s view of good practice, i.e. what a competent optician is able to do in practical and achievable terms within existing training and skills. It does not constitute a checklist of clinical or professional procedures that must be performed. The guidelines do not indicate what opticians must do in a given set of circumstances. They provide a guide as to the scope of services that the optician can provide. It is incumbent upon each optician to exercise professional judgment when determining the needs of each healthcare consumer.
